Beasts of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Shrouded Nerscylla

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Beasts - Nerscylla Subspecies - Render

This week, we check out the Shrouded Nerscylla! It lurks in the desert, and is able to paralyse.

The Shrouded Nerscylla is a spider-like monster with six legs that hangs out in the desert. Its body is light in colour owning to its diet of Khezu; it wears the skins of its slain food on its back. These skins give it the ability to paralyse like an ass hole, which I’ll get to in a minute. It has a few yellow spikes on its back, a pair of checlicerae and extendable jaws with the ability to poison.

This monster and the regular species belong to the temnoceran class of monsters, a new class of which they are the only members. Its movements are different to all other monsters and took me a while to get used to; it walks at a different pace to any other, and does this weird thing where it moves from side to side as it checks you out.

Seeing as it so obviously resembles a spider, this monster does have some web-based attacks. It can fire balls of web out of the end of its body, which if they hit you will inflict you with the web bound status. This status will render you immobile for a short time; mash buttons and spin the control stick to escape it. The balls of web it fires will stay on the ground for a couple of seconds after they land, so be sure not to run into them.

It uses its web in some other attacks too. One of its favourites is stick the web near the hunter and then using it to pull itself towards you, ramming into you for massive damage. It also uses this to change areas sometimes; it’ll stick its web on to the ground next to the exit and then propel itself forwards, crossing the map and and ending up in the next area.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Beasts - Nerscylla Subspecies - Swinging

The Shrouded Nerscylla can use its web like a vine and swing from place to place, even landing on top of the hunter for damage. Getting hit by the spikes on its back as it swings can lead to paralysis. It fires its web and latches on to… um… fighting it in an open area… it latches on to… to the… to the moon…?

I mentioned before this monster’s retractable jaw. The small jaws on its face can actually be extended and then snapped closed on its target, inflicting poison. It takes it a couple of seconds to actually extend them, so you have a fair bit of warning before they’re slammed shut to get away! The attack has a long range as well. These jaws can be broken twice, as can its face, back and abdomen. They ALL break twice, giving you a massive total of eight breaks on this thing. Kill it dead, and then set it on fire so it doesn’t come back!

Like a number of monsters in found in the desert, the Shrouded Nerscylla is able to burrow underground. After a few seconds small dust clouds on the ground will appear at the point where it’ll come back up, snapping its extendable jaws as it does so. This does a lot of damage, and will poison if it makes contact. The Shrouded Nerscylla can also poison hunters by standing on its hind legs and poking out its abdomen; if the end of it makes contact with the hunter, they will be poisoned.

Though it doesn’t do it often, the Shrouded Nerscylla can slam its body on to the ground directly in front of it to hit anyone nearby. When it gets angry, the bottom of its abdomen will begin to glow red.

That’s it for this most unusual of monsters. Next week is the online final boss, the Desert Seltas Queen!
